Beard Trim & Shave Surry Hills.

A proper beard service is not running a single guard over your face and calling it tidy. It is visual tailoring: fading the sideburn into your haircut, removing cheek bulk that widens the face, leaving structured weight on the chin and jaw, and setting crisp boundaries with a straight razor and hot towel. Handled one-on-one by Prince at 216 Devonshire Street, Surry Hills.

Beard sculpting uses graduated density and straight-razor geometry to sharpen your jawline without looking drawn on. Prince fades the upper sideburn so the beard connects smoothly into your haircut, sets a natural cheek line with a straight razor, and cuts a strong sub-jaw neckline backed by a hot towel and aftershave finish. Book the standalone Beard Clean-Up ($50, 30 min), the Deluxe Hot Towel Shave ($70, 45 min), or stack a beard clean-up onto your Haircut ($80, 45 min) in one sitting.

The services & technique

What happens in the chair

Whether you wear heavy facial hair, short boxed stubble, or want a clean straight-razor shave, here is how the work breaks down.

1. The Sideburn Bridge

A heavy block of beard right beside the ear widens the head. Fading the sideburn from skin or a low taper down into the cheek connects the beard seamlessly to your skin fade or scissor cut.

2. Jaw & Chin Contouring

Leaving slightly more length through the chin and the back corner of the mandible while taking bulk off the upper cheek creates a sharper, squarer jawline in both front and side profiles.

3. The Sub-Jaw Neckline

The biggest home-trimming mistake is carving the neckline too high up on the jaw. Prince sets the boundary underneath the jawbone so the beard keeps a solid, dark base when you move your head.

4. Straight-Razor Line-Up

Clipper trimmers leave a fuzzy edge that blurs within three days. A straight razor along the upper cheek and lower neck gives crisp contrast that makes even medium-density beards look fuller.

5. Hot Towel & Balm Finish

Every Beard Clean-Up ($50) finishes with a steaming hot towel and aftershave application so the skin settles immediately with zero razor burn.

6. Deluxe Hot Towel Shave ($70)

Forty-five minutes of unhurried traditional barbering (book here): pre-shave cream, layered hot towels, full straight-razor shave, and soothing post-shave balm.

Who + how

How to stop wrecking your beard line at home

Common home-trimmer traps

  • Chasing symmetry every morning: Taking a millimetre off the left cheek, compensating on the right, and accidentally dropping your cheek line into a chinstrap by Friday.
  • One guard all over: Running a #2 or #3 guard across the entire face flattens the chin and makes the cheeks look puffy.
  • Shaving the neck up to the jawbone: Destroys the shadow underneath the jaw that makes a beard look strong.

What to ask Prince for

"Fade the sideburns into my haircut, keep the cheek line natural and high, leave weight on the chin and jaw corner to square it off, and set the neckline with the razor."

Between visits (every 1 to 3 weeks), only clear the stray hairs well below the neck boundary Prince sets and comb the moustache off the lip. Leave the geometry for the chair.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

  • What is included in the Beard Clean-Up ($50, 30 min)?

The Beard Clean-Up ($50 AUD, 30 minutes) includes a consultation on jaw and face proportion, graduated sideburn-to-beard fading, bulk and length sculpting through the cheeks and chin, moustache detailing, a straight-razor cheek and neck line-up, a hot towel treatment, and aftershave finish.

  • What is included in the Deluxe Hot Towel Shave and Pamper ($70, 45 min)?

A full 45-minute traditional straight-razor shave ($70 AUD). It includes pre-shave cream preparation, multiple hot towels to soften the beard and open the pores, a traditional straight-razor shave, soothing aftershave balm, and a cool-towel finish for zero irritation.

  • Can I book a Haircut and Beard Clean-Up in the same appointment?

Yes. Select Haircut ($80, 45 min) on the booking page and tick Beard Clean-Up ($50, 30 min) under "Add another service". Prince runs both back-to-back in the same chair (1h 15m total, $130) so the temple fade and beard fade are designed as one continuous shape.

  • What is a skin fade beard?

Instead of the beard starting at full thickness beside your ear, Prince graduates the hair from skin or shadow at the sideburn down into fuller density along the jaw and chin. It prevents the sides of the face from looking wide and connects your haircut into your beard.

  • Where should the beard neckline sit?

Just above the Adam's apple where the underside of the jaw meets the neck, never curved high up onto the jawline itself. Cutting a neckline too high makes a beard look like a thin strap whenever you turn your head or nod. Leaving proper depth underneath the jaw is what makes the jawline look squared and strong from the side profile.

  • How often should I get my beard shaped and lined up?

Every 1 to 2 weeks if you want the razor cheek and neck lines permanently crisp, or every 3 to 4 weeks when paired with your regular haircut.

  • Does the straight-razor line-up irritate sensitive skin?

Dry razor scraping irritates skin; proper preparation does not. Every Beard Clean-Up and Hot Towel Shave at Fresh By Prince uses hot towel prep and soothing aftershave balm so the blade glides cleanly.

  • Where is Fresh By Prince located?
