Skin Fade Surry Hills.

A good skin fade is not measured with a ruler. It is placed against your bone structure, parietal ridge, and crown so the gradient looks seamless on day one and still holds its shape in week three. Prince cuts low, mid, mid-high, high, and curved drop skin fades from one chair at 216 Devonshire Street, Surry Hills.

A skin fade blends hair from foil-shaved bare skin at the perimeter through a compressed shadow gradient into the weight of the top. What separates a balanced fade from a harsh one is where the transition line sits relative to the temple peak, the parietal ridge (the widest bone on the side of the skull), and the occipital bone at the back. Every Haircut booking at Fresh By Prince ($80, 45 minutes) includes the consultation, foil-finished skin or zero fade, scissor work on top, hair wash, and scalp massage.

The architecture

Choosing your fade height, line, and base

When you ask for a skin fade, three separate decisions happen at the chair: where the shortest line starts, whether it runs straight or curves behind the ear, and how tight the base is finished.

1. Skin Taper (Temple & Nape)

Skin only at the sideburn and neckline. The ear arch stays natural. Best when you want a crisp outline without exposing scalp along the whole side. See Textured French Crop + Low Taper.

2. Low Skin Fade

Continuous skin base hugging just above the ear and dropping low at the nape. Preserves maximum dark weight along the parietal ridge for a fuller, classic head shape.

3. Mid Skin Fade

Starts around temple level. Balances clean side contrast with enough graduation room above it to blend into crops, curls, quiffs, or buzz cuts like the Mid Skin Fade Buzz Cut.

4. Mid-High & High Skin Fade

Lifts the skin line toward the upper temple. Removes side bulk completely and makes the top the sole focal point. Demands proper crown protection at the back.

5. Curved Drop Line

Instead of running horizontally across the back of the head, the fade arcs down behind the ear beneath the occipital bone. Explored in full on the Drop Fade Sydney pillar.

6. Foil Skin vs Zero Guard

Foil shaver takes the base to smooth skin for peak contrast. Zero clipper leaves a micro-shadow (like the Warrior Cut Low Zero Taper) for sensitive skin or a softer grow-out.

Who + how

Why some skin fades grow out boxy (and how Prince prevents it)

What Prince checks in the consultation

  • Parietal ridge width: If the sides of your skull flare out, taking a fade too high on coarse hair makes the corner stick straight out at week two.
  • Occipital bone & crown swirl: Pushing a flat high fade across the back removes the weight that holds your crown down.
  • Hair texture on top: Tight curls (Mid Skin Fade + Tight Curls), mullets (Textured Modern Mullet), and scissor flow each need a different graduation zone.
  • Sideburn-to-beard bridge: If you wear facial hair, Prince fades the sideburn downward too so the hair and beard connect seamlessly.

How to brief Prince at the chair

"I want a [low / mid / mid-high / high] [skin fade / skin taper / drop fade], taken to [bare skin with the foil / a zero shadow]. On top, I want [texture / a comb over / natural flow / my curls preserved]."

You never need to know clipper guard numbers. Bring one or two photos from the Cut Book or Instagram, tell Prince how many weeks you usually leave between cuts, and he will set the fade height to match your head shape.

Maintenance & booking

What's included in a $80 skin fade at Fresh By Prince

Every skin fade is booked under the standard Haircut ($80 AUD, 45 minutes). Unlike 20-minute express shops, Prince blocks a full 45 minutes for one chair: a diagnostic consultation up front, clipper-and-foil fade work, scissor shaping and texturising on top, a full hair wash and scalp massage at the basin, and blow-dry styling with product advice for home. Most skin-fade regulars rebook every 2 to 3 weeks; low skin tapers stretch comfortably to 3 to 4 weeks.

Answers

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the difference between a skin fade and a zero fade?

A skin fade takes the shortest point of the perimeter all the way down to bare skin with a foil shaver before graduating upward into shadow and length. A zero fade stops at the shortest clipper guard (0 / 000) without foil-shaving to the skin. Skin fades give the sharpest contrast on day one; zero fades leave a slight shadow and grow out more softly.

  • Should I get a low, mid, or high skin fade?

It depends on your head shape, parietal ridge, hair density, and how much contrast you want. A low skin fade or skin taper keeps darkness on the sides and suits professional settings or fuller tops. A mid skin fade sits around the temple and suits most head shapes. A mid-high or high skin fade removes side weight aggressively and puts all the focus on the top.

  • What is the difference between a skin taper and a full skin fade?

A skin taper concentrates the skin-level transition only at the temples/sideburns and the nape of the neck, leaving natural length around the ear arch and parietal ridge. A full skin fade carries the skin-level transition all the way around the sides and back.

  • Why does Prince curve most skin fades at the back (drop fade)?

Because the human skull is not flat. Dropping the fade line slightly below the occipital bone at the back preserves weight through the crown so the back of your head does not look flat from the side profile.

  • How long does a skin fade appointment take and what does it cost?

Forty-five minutes for $80 AUD. Book the standard Haircut service. Every appointment is handled one-on-one by Prince and includes a consultation, precision skin or zero fade, scissor work on top, hair wash, scalp massage, and styled finish.

  • How often should I book to keep a skin fade sharp?

Two to three weeks keeps the skin-to-shadow transition crisp. Because the base starts at bare skin, the first week of regrowth turns the skin base into a soft zero shadow, and by week three the perimeter is ready for a reset.

  • Can I pair a skin fade with a beard fade in one booking?

Yes. Select Haircut ($80, 45 min) on the booking page and tick Beard Clean-Up ($50, 30 min) as an add-on. Prince cuts both back-to-back in the same chair so the temple fade and sideburn beard fade connect as one seamless gradient.
