Same drop shape. Higher line. Sharper contrast without going full high.
Prince lifted the mid skin drop fade higher through the side panel, held the skin base, and kept the curve dropping behind the ear.
The result is a stronger side profile than a standard mid drop fade, without pushing the whole cut into aggressive high-fade territory. The drop keeps it fitted to the head; the higher line makes it read sharper from across the room.
What he wanted
A drop fade with more edge than the standard mid variant. Skin base for real contrast. Fade line lifted higher through the side panel so the top and the sides read as clearly separated, but still curved behind the ear so the shape follows the head instead of stamping a flat line around it.
What we did
- Mid-high skin base: shortest section at skin, taken higher up the side than a standard mid drop
- Held the drop shape through the back so the fade line curves lower behind the ear
- Kept the front temple height controlled so the side profile still reads as balanced
- Built the transition cleanly from skin through shadow into the top so the higher fade line doesn't jar
- Preserved crown weight above the fade so the top has something to sit against
Why the cut works
Height is the lever that makes this different. A mid drop fade sits comfortably; a high drop fade pushes hard; mid-high threads the middle. You get the sharper side profile of a high fade (more scalp exposure through the side panel, cleaner separation from the top) with the fitted head-following silhouette of a drop (curve behind the ear rather than a flat line). Whichever way you cut it, the drop is the part that stops the higher fade from turning the whole shape severe.
Who this cut suits
- You already like a drop fade but want more contrast
- You want a skin fade that reads sharper from a distance
- You want more separation between the top and the sides
- Your top length can carry the higher fade (short, textured, curly, or medium)
- You don't want to commit to a full high fade
- You want the shape to still follow your head, not fight it
Maintenance and grow-out
Same as any skin fade at this height: two to three weeks for a permanently sharp perimeter. The mid-high position softens visibly faster than a low fade because there's more skin-to-shadow contrast to lose. Stretch to four weeks if you're happy with a softer edge between visits.
At home
Depends on the top. Buzzed: nothing. Textured or short: a small amount of matte paste or clay worked through with your fingers. Longer top with movement: same, but keep the amount minimal so the shape sits naturally. The fade doesn't need product; the top does.
What to ask your barber
Ask for a mid-high skin drop fade. Take the fade to skin, lift the line higher through the side than a standard mid, and drop it lower behind the ear rather than running it straight around the head. Then show the photo. "Mid-high" and "drop" both vary; the reference gives the target and the consultation adjusts for your head shape and top length.
What is a mid-high skin drop fade?
A mid-high skin drop fade is a men’s haircut where the shortest section begins at skin level and sits between a mid and high position on the side of the head, while the fade line curves lower as it travels behind the ear. It sits between the standard Mid Skin Drop Fade and a full high skin fade, giving you sharper contrast without pushing the shape into severe territory.
The two things that make it distinct: skin at the base (maximum contrast), and the drop curve behind the ear (fitted to the head, not stamped flat around it).
Why the higher line
Fade height is the lever that changes everything. A standard mid drop fade holds a comfortable middle ground. A high fade pushes hard. Mid-high threads the middle: you get more scalp exposure on the side (which reads sharper from a distance), more separation between the top and the sides, without going into the aggressive-high territory where the fade starts dominating the whole cut.
Why the drop stays
Take the higher fade and run it flat around the head and you get a high-and-tight silhouette. Clean but severe. Take the same higher fade and keep the drop curve behind the ear and the shape follows the skull. That’s what stops the higher line from feeling stamped on. The drop is the softening element that makes a sharper fade wearable.
Where this sits in the drop-fade family
Prince has three drop fades documented so far:
- Mid Skin Drop Fade: the sweet spot for most clients. Skin base, mid position on the side, drop behind the ear. Cleanest all-purpose version.
- Mid-High Skin Drop Fade (this one): same drop, higher line. More contrast, more separation from the top.
- Future entries will document low drops and full high drops.

Who this suits
Best for clients who already know they like a drop fade shape but want more of it. If you’re new to drop fades, start with the mid. If you already have a mid drop fade and want to push it, this is the next step.
Works across straight, thick, textured, and curly hair. Top length matters more than hair type: shorter tops carry the higher line more comfortably, longer tops need the balance judged carefully.
Why get this cut at Fresh By Prince?
A mid-high drop fade is where the drop-fade family stops being about clipper number and starts being about judgement. The barber has to decide: how high the fade lifts on the side, where exactly it starts dropping, how the curve behind the ear reads against the rest of the shape. Get any of those wrong and the fade either loses its drop identity or reads uneven. Fresh By Prince is a one-chair studio at 216 Devonshire Street, Surry Hills. Prince handles the consultation, cut and finish, which matters on cuts that live or die by fade-line judgement.
Frequently asked
-
What is a mid-high skin drop fade?
A skin fade lifted between mid and high on the side panel, with the fade line curving lower behind the ear rather than running level around the head. Sharper contrast than a mid drop; less severe than a high skin fade.
-
How is this different from a standard mid skin drop fade?
Same drop shape (curve behind the ear), same skin base, but the fade line sits higher on the side. That gives you more scalp exposure and stronger contrast against the top without changing the fundamental drop architecture.
-
How is this different from a high skin fade?
A high skin fade often takes the fade line very high and runs it more level around the head. This keeps the drop curve, so the shape still follows the skull. Sharper than a mid drop; more fitted than a high.
-
Does it work with curly hair?
Very well. The drop preserves weight through the rear so the curl pattern still has room. The higher fade line makes the top curls read more clearly against the cleaner side.
-
Is a mid-high drop fade high maintenance?
Two to three weeks for a sharp fade. Because it's higher and skin-based, the contrast softens visibly faster than a low fade. Book fortnightly for permanent crispness or stretch to three-four weeks for softer perimeter.
-
Where does it fit in the drop-fade family?
Between the mid drop fade and a full high fade. Sharper than the mid, more fitted than a high. Useful when your top length can carry more contrast but you don't want the fade dominating the whole silhouette.
-
Can this work on shorter hair on top?
Yes. Buzzed and short-textured tops both work. The higher fade line reads clearer against a shorter top than a longer one. Longer tops still work but the shape balance shifts.
